Stamp Issue : 2005-09-17

Arts Bridge (Pont des Arts or Passerelle des Arts) is a pedestrian bridge in Paris, France which crosses the Seine River to link the Institute de France and the central square (cour carrée) of the palais du Louvre. Constructed between 1802 and 1804, it was the first metal bridge in Paris. It had nine arches, and its total length was 155 meters and width 11 meters. The bridge was rebuilt between 1981 and 1984 due to the damage caused by aerial bombardments during WWI and WWII and the multiple boat collisions. The present bridge has seven instead of previous nine arches while preserving the look of the old bridge.
The bridge has sometimes served as a place for art exhibitions, and is today a studio en plein air for painters, artists and photographers who are drawn to its unique point of view. The Pont des Arts is also frequently a spot for picnics during the summer.
