Philippine - Jones Bridge

Stamp Issue : 1947

Jones Bridge, formerly known as Puente de Espana (Bridge of Spain), was first built in 1701. It was rebuilt by the Americans in 1916 and renamed after Atkinson Jones, a member of the U.S. Congress and chairman of the Insular Affairs Committee who sponsored the Philippine Autonomy Act in 1916. Jones Bridge was once hailed as Manila's queen of the bridges until it fell into neglect and disrepair in the 1980s. However, some partial restoration has preserved the elegance of its neoclassical architecture. The bridge near the Manila Central Post Office and spanning the Pasig River.
