Taiwan ROC - University Pond Bamboo Bridge

Stamp Issue : 1983-03-01

The water in the University Pond is crystal clear like emerald. Across the pond sits an arch bridge made of bamboo with an unusual shape. It was constructed in the 1950's as a landmark of Xitou in Lugu Township of the Nantou County.
The main arch bridge across the University Pond is approximately 70 meters long, 1.5 meters wide, and rising, at it height, 5 meters from the surface of the pond water. It is not only one of the few man-made, bamboo arch bridges in Taiwan but is also known both in and outside of Taiwan for its beauty. The material used is Moso Bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) which needs to be totally replaced every one to two years. The bridge, however, is made not only with bamboo. At a later date, for the safety of the pedestrians, two reinforced concrete bridge columns, cast to look like bamboo, were sunk deep into the ground at both ends of the construction while from above two pre-stressed wire ropes were strung both to reinforce the structure and to increase the carrying capacity of the bridge.

Belgium - Pont des Arches

Stamp Issue : 1994-10-15

Pont des Arches was built 1858-1862 to replace the oldest bridge (11th Century) over the Meuse River, to connect the district Outremeuse downtown, in Liege, Wallonia, Belgium. Behind it on the right on the corner of Rue de la Boucherie/Potiérue is Maison Havart, a historic inn from 1594, dominated by the Cité Administrative, the City Administration building. From here it is a short distance back to Féronstrée. The current bridge was completed in 1947, the previous having been destroyed during the war. This is the sixth version of this bridge the founding dates back to 1025, making it the oldest of Liege.

Hungary - Margaret Bridge

Stamp Issue : 1961-09-24

Margaret Bridge or Margit híd (sometimes Margit Bridge) is a bridge in Budapest, Hungary, connecting Buda and Pest across the Danube. It is the second northernmost and second oldest public bridge in Budapest.
Margaret Bridge is the currently the worst worn bridge in Budapest. It is in urgent need of total overhaul, but cannot be shut down until a new bridge is built to the north of the city to handle sharply increasing car traffic. Since a new bridge is unlikely before 2015 due to bureaucratic issues, research has been started to find methods for the gradual in situ refurbishment of Margaret Bridge.
