Belgium - Pont des Arches
Stamp Issue : 1994-10-15
Pont des Arches was built 1858-1862 to replace the oldest bridge (11th Century) over the Meuse River, to connect the district Outremeuse downtown, in Liege, Wallonia, Belgium. Behind it on the right on the corner of Rue de la Boucherie/Potiérue is Maison Havart, a historic inn from 1594, dominated by the Cité Administrative, the City Administration building. From here it is a short distance back to Féronstrée. The current bridge was completed in 1947, the previous having been destroyed during the war. This is the sixth version of this bridge the founding dates back to 1025, making it the oldest of Liege.
