Stamp Issue : 1979-04-11

Richmond Bridge is a large sandstone arch bridge crossing Coal River, built by convict labor. Located at Richmond, 25 kilometers north of Hobart, state capital of Tasmania, it is the oldest bridge still in use in Australia.
The bridge was originally named Bigge's Bridge after Royal Commissioner, John Thomas Bigge who recognized the need for the bridge in 1820. The foundation stone was laid on 11 December 1823 and the construction was completed in 1925.
Recognized as an outstanding historic place, Richmond Bridge was included in the Australian National Heritage List on 25 November 2005.
