France - Old Bridge in front of Porte Chaussée

Stamp Issue : 1939-06-23

In front of Porte Chaussée was an ancient stone arch bridge across Meuse River in Verdun city in the Meuse department in Lorraine in north-eastern France. Lorraine is the only French region to have borders with three other countries: Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, which gives its location strategic significance.
Porte Chaussée is an impressive gateway into the city and dates back to 15th century. Nowadays it has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the town, where in 1916 the famous Battle of Verdun of the First World War took place. The old bridge was replaced by a concrete bridge later.
